Mouth appliances like mouth guards, dentures, and orthodontics are extremely common around the world. Because these appliances are expensive and spend precious time in your mouth, it’s important to keep them clean. But does it really make sense to marinate your dental appliance in chemicals when it spends several HOURS, often 8 or more per day in your mouth?
Dr. Mark Burhenne DDS doesn’t think so: “The active ingredient persulfate is my major concern. The FDA has asked the manufacturers of Fixodent, Polident, Efferdent, and other denture cleaners to change the product labeling to include warnings about the risks of allergic reactions which could be caused by persulfates. The FDA also asked the manufacturers to consider alternate ingredients to replace persulfate.”
According to the FDA there have been at least 73 reports of adverse events, including at least one death related to denture cleaners.
